The ratio of 2D length to 4D length, known as the 2D:4D ratio, is therefore 2D:4D < 1 for most men and 2D:4D 1 for most women. The second-to-fourth digit length ratio (2D:4D) has been proposed as a marker of these prenatal androgen effects, a relatively longer fourth finger indicating. To test this hypothesis, the researchers collected data on finger length and 2D:4D ratio from over 7,500 people, including representatives of the three big races, different ages and nationalities they then compared the 2D:4D ratios and finger lengths in these cohorts. Prenatal androgens have important organizing effects on brain development and future behavior. Some believe that 2D:4D ratio differences are only due to differences in total finger length and their uneven growth ( allometry) in men and women, which is related to specifics in bone or fat tissue development prenatal hormone levels don’t play any role. However, not all researchers agree with this theory.
